How to Stop Comparing Yourself to Others (and Stop Feeling Lousy About Yourself and Your Life)

Image
by Henrik Edberg “If you compare yourself with others, you may become vain and bitter, for always there will be greater and lesser persons than yourself.”  Max Ehrman One very common and destructive daily habit is to constantly compare your life and yourself to other people and their lives. You compare cars, houses, jobs, shoes, money, relationships, social popularity and so on. And at the end of the day you pummel your self esteem to the ground and you create a lot of negative feelings within. And perhaps also outside of yourself. So what can you do? How can you get a handle on this habit? In this article I’ll share what I have done. I’ll start with two habits that I use to replace that destructive habit. Then I’ll move on to a few more general tips that have also helped me. Compare yourself to yourself. First, instead of comparing yourself to other people create the habit of comparing yourself to yourself. See how much you have grown, what y...

Focus on your Personal Strengths, Not Correcting All the Weaknesses

Image
In 2007, Gallup asked thousands of US workers a provocative question: "At work, do you have the opportunity to do what you do best every day?" Shockingly, only 32% of people said that they did. Other countries were even worse. This represents a remarkable misallocation of talent: imagine the huge overall gain to productivity that would come from reshuffling everyone into roles they are suited for! Alas, no one can pick people up and shuffle them around by force; not Gallup, not the government, not even the Jolly Green Giant. Only the people themselves can do this. This means you. So if, on reflection, you discover you're one of the 68% that doesn't get the chance to use their true talents at work, here are a few reasons you might want to consider a change of career: Strengths contain your greatest potential for growth It's so intuitive - "I'm worst at tasks involving my weaknesses, so my greatest potential for development is in these areas. I...

40+ Tips to Improve your Grammar and Punctuation

After all these years you finally have the courage and opportunity to write the email announcing that you and you alone have single handedly saved the company from utter disaster. Do You Make These 8 Personal Development Mistakes ?

Image
Most people suck at improving themselves. Even when they’re trying their hardest to become a better person, they wind up running on the dreaded personal development hamster wheel – hours of effort, zero results. It’s not because they’re stupid. It’s not because they’re lazy. It’s definitely not because it’s not possible. It’s because they’re making the mistakes that most people make when they’re trying to change their life for the better. That’s why there’s so many people reading self-help blogs, self-help books, and taking self-help classes and yet so few people making a meaningful and lasting difference. So here’s a list of the eight most common (and most damaging) mistakes that people make in personal development. Are you guilty of any of these? Are You Fixing Your Weaknesses? Don’t you just hate being bad at things? It makes you feel dumb playing tennis when you’ve only ever played against Wii characters. You feel small when someone mentions James K. Polk and ex...

Strategies to Help Build Your Self Esteem

Image
Everyone will go through a phase where self-image and self-esteem are questioned and molded. During this existential crisis it’s important to establish a healthy sense of self-worth and maintain well-being. This means avoiding people, places, and things that make you feel lousy, and starting to cultivate and engage in those activities and relationships that build you up. To make sure you work through these moments of self-doubt, follow the five strategies below. Experience Success First and foremost, the most effective way to begin changing self-defeating thoughts and behavior is to experience success and accomplish goals. Psychologist Martin Seligman explains that it’s not the praise and positive things people say, but encountering and experiencing repeated successes. It’s important to seek out situations where you are likely to succeed. Start by setting achievable goals . As you begin to experience success your self-esteem will follow, and the pursuit of bigger goals can be appr...

How to Turn Your Ideas into Life Changing Actions

Image
If you’re like me (and most people on the planet), you have plenty of ideas that could potentially change your life dramatically. Perhaps you’re thinking about losing weight , or starting your own business , or writing a novel : you might even have several great ideas jostling around in your head. The problem comes, though, in the gap between idea and action . It’s easy to get excited by a great idea or an audacious goal – it’s a lot harder to put in the work that gets you from A to Z. Here’s how to take those ideas and make them real: Choose ONE Idea However many ideas you’ve got, try to pick just one thing to focus on first. That way, you’ll be much more likely to succeed: you won’t burn yourself out by trying to do too much, and you won’t find that some of your ideas are getting sidelined by others. If you’re not sure where to begin, choose an idea that will fit into your current life (with, perhaps, a few tweaks to your priorities and commitments). Don’t quit your job ...

How to Delete That Negative Voice in Your Brain

Image
Even the most positive, well-adjusted person in the world still falls victim to his or her own negative thoughts now and again. It’s human nature. It’s The Saboteur. It’s the price we pay for all that amazing human intelligence. But that doesn’t make it right. Stop for a minute and listen to the voices in your head. Most of us have at least one or two on a constant loop, repeating the same negative —and often untrue— drivel day in and day out. It’s such an unconscious pattern that many people hardly even notice it. They certainly don’t have to think about it. But it’s there, swirling around, causing all kinds of unspoken damage —things like stress, low self-confidence and fear of taking risks to name a few. So why not hit the delete key on negative self-talk? Here’s how: Open Your Ears How can you improve a situation if you aren’t quite sure what it is? Before you can remove the negative self-talk, you have to sit with it and hang out. Get to know it a bit and let it be heard. Th...

Five Lies Personal Development Gurus Like to Tell

Image
Personal development gurus tell some impressive lies in order to sell their products. That’s right. Lies. These convenient little falsehoods are effective motivators because they play on primal human needs and emotions. Shouldn’t people who promote personal growth for a living be uncommonly straightforward in their marketing? Sadly, this is far from true, even among the popular names in the field. The good news is that once you understand these, you are free to grow and develop in realistic ways. Guru Lie #1: You can have anything you want. It sounds so good, especially after you have been swept away by a motivational message that ignites your passion for becoming all you can be. You can do anything you put your mind to! There is only one problem. You can’t. You cannot have anything you want in life. When it comes down to it, this lie is so blatant that it is downright silly. In high school I was a gifted tennis player with dreams of playing in college and taking my shot at t...

Improve Your Vision Naturally

Image
It seems that very little is done to help people prevent their eyes from deteriorating. Excuse my cynicism, but the opticians do absolutely nothing to help this. They merely keep testing peoples visions until they have deteriorated to a point where they deem they need glasses or contact lenses. Then your eyes start becoming lazy and more dependant on the vision aids. They deteriorate further and the opticians can sell you a stronger pair of grossly overpriced glasses or contacts. Great business eh? What they do not tell you or help you with is the prevention of eye sight deterioration and even the improvement of it in natural ways. Why would they - that would do them out of sales! Fear not though people – FreeHypnosisTreatment.com will show you how to get the best of your eyes, and beat the optician. The three common faults of vision are not using the peripheral vision, star...
